2011 Cabrinha nomad 11m review by Nathaniel Fuller.
My fist ever review so I hope its OK and gives you a good insight to the kite.
"The all new Cabrinha Nomad IDS Freestyle Wave kite. The non-bow hybrid IDS kite combines the best of both worlds…a moderate C-shaped arc and an IDS bridle to deliver Cabrinha's fastest turning kite yet."
so, i got the nomad on Friday and used it all weekend in varying condition from flat to waves.
One thing i noticed immediately is the simplicity and well thought out design. The bag is just the right size and has a pocket on each side for your pump (included) and bar and lines. Also included is a pack down sack for when the struts are left inflated, which has a convenient carry handle. All ver nice quality and have the Cabrinha naming in stylish writing on them.
When taking the kite out of the bag I noticed that the leading edge and wing tip area material is very stiff.
The bridal looks very simple and does not get tangled.
Even though the kite has 6 struts it pumps up in a flash with the cabrinha sprint inflation, this was my first time using this system and was no problem at all, it is a good idea and just works.
The graphics on the kite are simple but effective and classy, personally i like them but others may want there kite to look more flashy or quirky like some of the newer gear out there.
Right so now the kite is pumped up, one pump clips closed and is sitting on the beach in 20-28mph winds (im power hungry and fat so i can hold down and 11in these winds and some).
The struts seem to be real stiff so they stand up, not bending over, this did make the kite more difficult to stop from flying away, but plenty of sand and a board on the le and it stays put.
Moving to the bar and lines, the IDS is an industry exclusive and I have not come across this system before, I'm used to north 5th element so I had no idea how it was going to preform. Laying out the 4 lines is simple, front lines have a swivel so just connect up the matching colours and you are away.
First flight put a smile on my face :-), the kite was really stable (down to the solid construction), reactive and had a good feel in the bar pressure(all standard factory settings used throughout).
Moving the kite about in the air was effortless and floated back form the edge of the window or when beeing over flown at the zenith nicely keeping a good line tension. When sending the kite to the zenith and sheeting in there was an amazing amount of pop and upwards pull.
The power through the window is very smooth, progressive and stable.
When i got on the water I immediately connected with the kite. For an 11m the turning speed around its tip was just right and the depower on the IDS system works really well, allows you to depower/power with the two toggles that are connected to a strap sytem on the move easily and safely, I ditched the kite in the water a couple of times and did not get tangled, just pull on the steering line and the kite comes to the edge of the window and re-lauches. No issues there.
Jump timing was strange at fist but when I got the timing right (holding the edge that little bit longer) the pop, lift and hangtime was awesome. Very pleased at this point. Riding towards the kite in the waves did not present and problems, the kite flew downwind and did not fall out of the sky.
On a whole the kite and its control gear preformed very well and put a grin on my face. I think its has alot of power for an 11m. I would say for and intermediate looking to go big and progress to ariel tricks this is the kite for you. Very happy :-)
